Description: High style walnut Renaissance Revival Victorian sofa
attributed to John Jeliff, Newark, NJ. The heads on the arms are the
trademark of the Jeliff firm. In "American Furniture of the 19th Century" by
Eileen and Richard Dubrow, a sofa on page 181 and table on page 183, both
attributed to Jeliff, have a very similar carved head motif. It has an very
fancy open carved crest with a head in the middle. The entire frame is
exquisitely decorated with ornate turned finials, shaped burled panels,
incised carvings, and carved rosettes. It retains the original gilt high
lights that helps to embellish some of the elements. There are turned legs in
front and it has all four original castors. It has old upholstery -
possibly original. It would look stunning recovered with the same tufting
as demonstrated here. The frame is in remarkably fine tight original
condition. This is one of the more elaborate forms we have seen for a
Jeliff sofa!
