Description: Renaissance Revival rosewood Victorian sofa attributed to Pottier and Stymus, NYC. The open carved top crest has an oval bronze plaque depicting four youngsters in rough and tumble play. Incised carvings retaining some of their original gilt decorate most of the frame, including the four fluted round turned front legs. This piece features a beautifully patinated bronze bust on each sofa arm of a woman with an elaborate head dress. It has the original brass cup casters on the feet. There are a few small chips in the front legs. It was recovered 50-60 years ago and the fabric is distressed. Originally, it would have been covered without the cushions, ideally with diamond tufting. This is how we would recommend it to be reupholstered. Pottier and Stymus was one of the premier furniture makers of the period and often used bronze plaques and busts in their living room pieces. Look past the upholstery on this piece - it is a fabulous frame that could be stunning if carefully redone in the fabric of your choice!
