Description: Majestic walnut Victorian sofa signed "Hunzinger NY Patented
March 1868," Hunzinger was one of the most innovative furniture makers of
the period and this sofa is one of his finest examples. It features
extensive carvings, turned stretchers and applied carved rosettes. Black
lacquer and gilt were used to enhance various carvings and incised fluting.
Much of this original decoration is still intact. The sofa has it's
original brass castors on the front and back. An identical sofa is shown on
page 181 of "American Furniture of the 19th Century" by Eileen and Richard
Dubrow. It was recently reupholstered in a dark maroon velvet. This is a
rare and prime example of Hunzinger's work!
