Description: Superb solid mahogany bench attributed to R. J. Horner, NYC. This piece features many of the carved motifs employed by Horner including the pair of mermaids on the back, winged gargoyles under the arms, a cupid in the center of the bottom with gargoyles on either side, a lion head on each side with a ring in its mouth, and front feet with a mask carved in the middle. In addition, notice the lovely carved moldings that go horizontally around the base, seat, and top. Even the sides of the base have detailed three dimensional carvings. The seat lifts up to reveal a storage compartment underneath. There is a slight joint separation in the seat. A cushion was made by a previous owner that goes on the seat if you so desire (see photo). A wonderful bench by the foremost furniture makers of the period!
