Description: Matched pair of laminated rosewood Rococo Victorian armchairs
in the Tuthill King pattern made by John Henry Belter, NYC. These chairs
have a "C" and "S" scrolled frame with extensive open carved flowers, fruit,
grapes, and leaves. The cabriole front legs end in original brass castors.
The nearly identical chair is shown on page 101 of "American Furniture of the
19th Century" by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. According to family history,
these two chairs were purchased from Belter by the Fitzhugh family for their
home "Hampton" near Mt Morris, New York. The Tuthill king pattern is one
of the most desirable of those that Belter made. They were reupholstered by
the previous owner. They have a few normal small veneer chips on the bottom
of the skirts which we will be happy to repair. Generally these rare chairs
are in the wonderful untouched original condition that serious collectors
covet!
