Description: Very rare walnut Victorian cabinet made by Danial Pabst,
Philadelphia. The crest has a three dimensionally carved head with a ring of
beads surrounding it. There are delicately open carved standing birds on each
corner and a felt lined drawer in the top. Underneath is a drawer
with an original silver (worn) lining in the interior with two covered
compartments (see photo) and a lion head pull. The bottom cupboard door has
a recessed burled front with the most extraordinary deep relief carvings
featuring a fox and heron bordered by grapes, leaves and cattails. The
columns on the sides are carved and have fluting at the top and bottom.
There is a shelf in the interior. The sides have lovely shaped burled
raised carving set in a recessed panel. The entire cabinet has extensive
incised carving including a geometric repeated design in the base. A well
documented cabinet of a similar form (although not as compelling as this
example) is pictured on page 54 of "Art and Enterprise, American Decorative
Art 1825 - 1917, The Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection." A short biography
on Pabst is on the same page. In April 1977 the Philadelphia Museum of Art
(Volume 73 Number 316) published their research on Danial Pabst. A similar
cabinet to the one referenced above is shown on page 12 of the pamphlet.
Notice the sides of this cabinet and the one that we are offering for sale
have the identical carving! On page 14 a cabinet is shown with the
identical lion head pull (although ours is missing the ring in the mouth -
we could easily have this made). The incised carved rosettes on the corners
of the front and side panels match those on the night table shown on page
17. Daniel Pabst was the most renowned Philadelphia maker of the period.
This masterpiece is one of the best pieces of his furniture we have ever
seen offered for sale!
