Description: Sensational solid rosewood Victorian music cabinet possibly
made by Herter Brothers., NYC. This piece features elaborately carved
columns, edges and panels. The carved motifs include birds in the top, a
lady in a formal gown on the bottom door and flowers on the sides. There is
an original beveled glass mirror above the main surface. The deeply carved
bottom drawer has exceptional original brass pulls with a ring in the mouth
of a gargoyle. The bottom of the drawer and the inside of the cabinet door
are made out of vibrant birdseye maple. The cabinet interior is fitted for
music with a horizontal shelf and five vertical slots with shaped dividers.
The front feet are intricately carved hairy claws. We polished the original
finish on this piece without stripping. The band of inlay on the front door
was damaged and had to be replaced. While we cannot definitely attribute
this piece to Herter there were only a few cabinet shops of this period that
would have made a piece of such extraordinary quality, workmanship, design
and materials!
