Description: Rare rosewood Rococo Victorian sewing stand attributed to John Henry Belter. It has a needlepoint on the inside of the lid. The identical piece is shown on page 83 of The Furniture of John Henry Belter and the Rococo Revival by Marvin D. Schwartz. The description reads as follows: "A rectangular box-shaped storage area with a sarcophagus like cover and a lower drawer with tapering sides on simple cabriole legs supported by cross-stretchers that form a shelf in the center. There is a pierced shell-and-leaf carving on the bottom drawer. This simple piece was used with a bed by Belter in a home furnished from the Belter shop." Belter made many chairs, sofas and marble top tables but seldom accessory pieces. This is a great find in excellent original condition!
