Description: Magnificent Renaissance Revival carved oak sideboard
attributed to Alexander Roux, NYC. A similar piece, labeled "Roux" is shown
on page 81 of "Styles of American Furniture 1860-1960" by Eileen and Richard
Dubrow. This one has all the carvings you could possibly want - and more!
Notice the fully carved bird eating fruit finials on each side of the top
with a fully carved deer head in the middle. Beneath the deer's head, an
intricately carved scene depicts two dogs chasing a boar in a thicket of
grapes, vines and fruit. There are carved heads on the top of the fruit
carved supports. There is one large top shelf and one smaller one above the
surface. There are five carved dog heads separating the four drawers in the
base. The two side drawers swing from front to back. Each drawer has a
most intricate fruit and nut carved pull. The four cupboard doors exhibit
the amazing carvings often found on Roux pieces. We have taken a
picture of each of the four here because each one is so unique and
artistically rendered. Motifs include fish, foul, boar, deer, horn, rifle,
fish net, sting ray, and turtle. We especially like the later two subjects,
having never seen them carved before on a sideboard. There are two pie
shaped shelves on each side of the cupboard base and one long shelf in the
middle. The entire case of this piece is primarily fine quality quartered
oak with rich tiger grain. One can stand in front of this piece and spend
some time examining it and marveling at all the exquisite attention to
detail - a work of art!
