Description: WOW! A fabulous Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian cabinet
attributed to Allen & Brother, Philadelphia. There is a cabinet on the top
and bottom with a narrow drawer under the surface and open area on both
sides. The cabinet is elaborately adorned with ornate carved moldings,
extensive book matched burled veneers, incised carvings with original gilt,
and ebonized accents. It is prominently decorated with wonderful elaborate
human busts, animal heads, fruit, and foliage. There are two original drop
pulls on the drawer. The ring bears the inscription "Castock, NY Patd Dec
6, 1870." It is in superb original condition. The very top is scratched
where it likely bore a large bronze clock. An excellent article on the
Allen and Brother Company is in the May 1996 issue of "The Magazine Antiques."
On pages 720-722 items are pictured which have the same flavor - unique to
this company - as this piece. A magnificent cabinet by one of the nation's
premier makers of the period!
