Description: Outrageous Rococo Victorian rosewood server with thick red
and white marble top with beveled black border. The marble (repaired) is a
rare rich red and white color. The mirror has a fantasy winged serpent
creature with tongue out menacingly viewing an open mouthed snake on the
right hand side. The wings feature superb detail in the carvings. The
lower part of the serpent, along with flowers and leaves, are carved in
relief in front of an original mirror. The two drawers are asymmetrical and
have three dimensionally open carved vines and leaves applied to the fronts.
Two large cabriole shaped legs with carvings at the top go from the surface
to the base in front. The cabinet has two mirrored doors with a heavily
carved molding for a border. We have had the interior of the cabinet
restored. It has four compartments made of satinwood with rosewood fronts.
This cabinet was certainly made by one of the fine NYC craftsmen of the
period. Alexander Roux used rich carvings and unusual marbles on many of
his pieces but we can't make a definite attribution. This is a unique
attractive piece with most amazing carvings!
