Description: Fabulous walnut Modern Gothic walnut Victorian hall
mirror on
stand attributed to Daniel Pabst, Philadelphia. The top crest has
a lionhead in the top and open carved flowers beneath. There are
exceptional
carved finials on each corner. The top has seven fancy turned
finials for
hats. The center mirror (some normal minor silver loss) has a deep
bevel
and is surrounded by an
intricately carved floral border. Ten recessed carved panels are
under the
mirror. The mirror sets on a base which attaches to the wall.
There are
two drawers with fancy carved fronts and great lion head pulls
where one
opens the drawers by pulling on the lions mouth. A Pabst side
cabinet with
an identical pull, but with a ring in the lions mouth, is shown on
page 14
of the Bulletin of the Philadelphia Museum of Art from April 1977.
This was
a special issue devoted to the work of Pabst. The sides of this piece
have been cut out to accommodate house moldings in the past - see
photo.
This is a magnificent piece made by one of the most renowned
craftsman of
the era!
