Description: Unusual solid quartered oak dining table with gargoyle carved base. The 54" top has a carved edge and deeply carved curved skirt. Two large leaves were made to match - even the skirts are carved. When fully extended the table opens to a 114" oval (see photo). There is a slight gap in the top with the leaves in, due to the fact that the skirts touch before the top wood. The split pedestal base reveals a large center support leg when opened. The base features four intricately carved, open mouthed, bearded gargoyles with serpent tails, wings, and breasts. This table was likely made by R.J. Horner, NYC although we have never seen this exact motif on a table before. The base rests on four claw feet. There is an original metal mechanism for holding both the top and base tightly together. Most ornate carved tables are at least 60" in diameter. It is unusual to find one of this smaller size. The ornate carved base and top with two large skirted leaves make this a very attractive and functional dining table!
