Description: Very rare collection of five E.N. Welch historical gingerbread
clocks. I purchased the USS Maine in 1974 and was so intrigued by it that I
decided to try and collect the other five in the series. I have diligently
looked for them over the last thirty five years and have been successful in
locating these other four including Wheeler, Schley, Dewey and Sampson.
Only the Lee has eluded me. The entire series is pictured on page 69 in
"Clock Identification and Price Guide" by Roy Ehrhardt 1977. Two of them are
shown on page 300 of "A Treasury of American Clocks" by Brooks Palmer. As a
part of our downsizing, I have decided to sell this amazing - almost
complete - set. They all have the original historical glasses, faces and
pendulums. Four have the flag and shield pendulum (see last photo). The
Schley has a different Welch pendulum. An individual description follows: 1.
Wheeler has flags on the glass and sides of the case. The face is original
but quite dark with an alarm in the middle. The case appears to have been
refinished. The base has a series of shields. 2. Sampson has an old
alligatored finish and the original label on the back (see photo). There
are ships cannon at the top and sailors behind ships wheels in the bottom.
His ship "New York" is pictured on the glass. There are a series of stars
and anchors along the base. Each of the following three clocks have the
identical base. 3. Dewey is the most common of the series. We have had
two or three others over the years. There is an American flag on either
side of his face and ships on the side. His ship "Olympia" is depicted on
the glass. There is an alarm in the dial. The case may have been
refinished years ago. 4. There is a flag on either side of the face. The
sides of the case also show ships with his ship "Brooklyn" on the tablet.
The case has been refinished years ago. 5. Maine has a wreath with a star
in the middle on either side of the doomed battleship. Gun turrets are
shown on the sides with the battleship and stars on the glass. It has a
good original finish with a small stain in the bottom front of the case.
There is also an alarm in the dial. As a true collector, we choose to not
alter the finish on any of the clocks. We could easily have them all
refinished to match at the customer's request. These clocks depict a macho
time in America when we were starting to expand our power and influence.
There were only a handful of these clocks made and their incredible scarcity
leads us to conclude that they are mostly residing in collections.
